Art

What will the exam be like?

Exam board:

AQA 8202

Assessment:

In art your grade is determined by both coursework in your portfolio and an end of year 11 ‘exam’ and ‘set task’.

Coursework/portfolio accounts for 60% of your final grade (96 marks).

  • Portfolio coursework themes: Water and Close Up projects. Each one 4 terms in length. In your portfolio you will need a minimum of:
  • 2/3 exploratory pages to examine your ideas/theme
  • 2 in depth artist studies that are written in the first person that specifically link to your theme. These must have copies of the artwork created by you, these could be drawn/painted/sculpted.
  • Approximately 10 observational drawings related to your theme in pencil, pen, watercolour etc. these need to be of a really high standard.
  • Each piece of work needs to have a title and a small paragraph that explains what you are doing and why
  • Approximately 10 experiments with the media you want to focus on, for example if you are using photography as your main media, you must experiment with it, or, you are using wire as your main media, make small practice pieces to show the examiner how your work has developed.
  • 2 final pieces in different media, based on two different projects worked through in year 10 and early year 11 which will be done in your 5 hour mock. The first one can be smaller and the second one must be a substantial piece of work that is of exceptional quality

Set task or exam

This is a project based on a theme given by the examination board in January which you will work through until the end of April. You will have a practical exam also based on this theme for standardisation

  • 10 hours
  • 96 marks
  • 40% of GCSE grade

What specialist equipment will my child need?

In order to be successful in GCSE art lessons students will need:

  • 2 A3 sketchbooks. One for each project

  • A Range of pencils HB, B, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B. Coloured pencils.

  • Rubber and an A3 carry wallet for loose project work.

What other resources do you recommend?

The following are optional to buy (and other versions are also available), but we would suggest purchasing some of these to use alongside your course. They would be available through parent pay and are bought at a lower cost.

  • A range of media to use at home e.g. watercolour, oil pastels, charcoal pencils.  We will be experimenting with these in class and students will need to complete their own pieces at home.
