Black History Month 2026

Black History Month is an annual celebration that honors the history, achievements, and central role of Black individuals in shaping society.

Where does Black History Month originate from?

Black History Month originated in the United States, where historian Carter G. Woodson established Negro History Week in 1926. The celebration was later expanded to a month and officially recognised as Black History Month in the USA in 1976. In the UK, Black History Month has been celebrated nationally since October 1987.

Why is it important to recognise Black History Month in the UK?

Black History Month provides an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the history, achievements and contributions of Black people in Britain and around the world. It also encourages us to learn about stories and experiences that may not always receive as much attention within the traditional curriculum.

For our school community, it is an opportunity to learn, listen, celebrate diversity and develop a greater understanding of the experiences and contributions of others.

How can students get involved?

There are lots of ways students can take part, including:

• Learning about influential Black figures from history and today.
• Exploring Black British history and its links to our local community.
• Reading books by Black authors or featuring Black experiences.
• Listening to music and exploring art, culture and traditions.
• Taking part in school activities, competitions, assemblies or discussions.
• Sharing something they have learned with friends, their tutor group or the wider school community.

Black History Month is not just about looking back — it is an opportunity to celebrate contributions, broaden our understanding and continue learning throughout the year.
