Posted on: 12/12/2023

Year 9 students were invited to attend the Oxford University Christmas Lectures in the Natural History Museum in Oxford. This year the lectures were on:

Talk 1 Birth of a Planet

Within just 5 million years, our solar system changed from a vast disc of dust and gas into the planets we recognise today. In this talk, James Bryson (Department of Earth Sciences) describes how we investigate this time using the oldest rocks in the solar system.

Talk 2 How Predators Shape Nature

Take wolves away from Yellowstone and you lose forests. Introduce foxes and cats to Australia and you decimate native wildlife.  Let pigeons evolve without predators and you end up with a dodo! Tim Coulson (Department of Biology) describes the vital role that predators play in nature.
