Welcome to the Science Department at The Henry Box School

The Henry Box School Science Department is committed to improving the level of scientific understanding of all our students. We believe that by building on the natural curiosity intrinsic to every child, we can prepare them for a world in which scientific literacy is increasingly important.


Key Stage 3 Curriculum

At KS3 students are exposed to a wide range of subjects and a variety of hands-on experiences to enable them to develop a sound basic understanding of key conceptual areas.


Topics studied in Year 7 are:

Homework will be set regularly by all teachers using Show My Homework. These homework tasks will range from written tasks to investigations at home and building models to bring into school.


Structure of assessment and how students can prepare

Each topic begins with a self-assessment sheet which is used to track progress. In addition students sit a formal test three times a year. These tests incorporate several topics that have recently been studied. Students can prepare for the tests by reading through their exercise books, looking on science revision websites and using KS3 science revision guides.


Key Stage 4 Curriculum

During the options process in Year 9 those students on track to attain a grade 6 or above at GCSE have the opportunity to choose to study Separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics courses. All other students follow a Combined Science (Trilogy) course, leading to a double GCSE grade. Both pathways follow GCSE specifications from AQA examination board.

Both Separate and Combined courses follow broadly the same topics.

8. Chemical analysis

Year 10

Students will complete regular end of module tests along with a longer end of year GCSE style exam on all the material studied.


Year 11

All GCSE courses are linear, which means that all students will take all exam papers in the summer of Year 11.

All students will sit 6 exam papers in total, 2 in each of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.


Preparing for exams:

GCSE exams in Science include questions that allow students to demonstrate:

  1. knowledge and understanding of the content developed in one section or topic, including the associated mathematical and practical skills
  2. the ability to apply mathematical and practical skills to areas of content they are not normally developed in
  3. the ability to draw together different areas of knowledge and understanding within one answer

A range of question types will be used, including multiple choice, short answer and those that require extended responses. Extended response questions will be of sufficient length to allow students to demonstrate the ability to construct and develop a sustained line of reasoning which is coherent, relevant, substantiated and logically structured. Extended responses may be prose, extended calculations, or a combination of both, as appropriate to the question.

For questions examining assessment objective 1 it is vital that students learn the content and calculations from the course. This content can be found in their exercise books, revision guide or bbcbitesize. Completing workbook questions or completing bbc bitesize activities will test this knowledge.

To be able to effectively tackle assessment objective 2 and 3 questions students must practice answering questions from past examination papers. Examples can be found in their exercise books.

Available in school are revision guides and workbooks for each GCSE qualification. These can be purchased from Mr Eden in the Biology prep room. Exam papers and mark schemes are available for each GCSE on the AQA website
