Year 10 receive talk about Russell Group universities from former teacher Dan Powell

Posted on: 30/11/2018

We were very lucky last week to have Dan Powell, from New College in Oxford, come to talk to thirty of our Year 10 students about the skills and attributes needed to apply to Russell Group universities. Dan was a former Geography teacher at The Henry Box School and is now Head of Outreach at New College.

Dan told our students about his own experience of applying to study Geography at Oxford from a state school in Wales. This helped our students to understand the importance of aiming high and putting in the work now to achieve success in the future.

He encouraged the students to think about the importance of A levels and to have ambitious goals. He urged the students to study the subjects they love and to broaden their knowledge and understanding through reading and going to lectures. The Geographical Society, for example, run a series of lectures from St Edwards School in Oxford.

It was an interesting and motivating talk which nicely led on to year 10 parents evening – so our students could find out directly how to improve on their GCSE studies and to get the best results they can. We would like to thank Dan for giving up him time to come and speak to us.
