I&I - ICT & Computing

Welcome to the Computing and ICT Department.

We offer a broad Computing and ICT curriculum covering essential elements of software use, digital safety as well as understanding how computers work and how to program them. We aim to provide students with practical software skills as well as the knowledge and understanding to become the ICT tool designers of the future.

 

Meet the Staff

Miss S Squires (Subject Leader of ICT & Computing)

 

ICT at Key Stage 3

In Key Stage 3 students receive one lesson per week. Topics of study are divided into 6 week units and students are assessed at the end of each unit.

 

Year 7 Topics

Topics include:

Digital Safety

An introduction to using the school network, digital safety and computer use etiquette.

Under the hood of the computer

Students will learn to ‘think’ like a computer and understand how computers process data.

Think like a computer scientist

Students will be introduced to computational thinking and problem solving.

Programming using Logo and Scratch

Students start learning programming using visual languages in Logo and Scratch

Python turtle

Students move on to text based programming using the turtle module of Python.

Kodu

Students will create a game using Kodu, building and transferring their programming skills into a new environment.

 

Year 8 Topics

Topics include:

Binary

Students will learn the concept of binary, and how computers use this to represent data.

Logical thinking

Students will learn about computational thinking and develop skills in logical thinking. They will take part in the national Bebras competition during this term.

Microsoft

Using a given scenario, students will create a range of documents related to the scenario and will learn how to use the Microsoft suite effectively in this project based assignment.

Digital Graphics

Continuing with the previous scenario, students will learn how to use graphic software to create a set of products for a particular audience and purpose.

Website design Students will begin to explore concepts of website design and learn how to develop a website using Serif software for a given scenario.

 

Year 9

Topics include:

Binary

Students will continue to develop their knowledge of binary from year 8 and create a tutorial to teach younger students.

Digital citizen & logical thinking

Students will explore the idea of being a digital citizen using the iDEA platform.  They will continue to develop skills in logical thinking and will again take part in the national Bebras competition during this term.

Animation

Students will learn about key frame animation and will complete a 20 second animation linked to a topic of their choice.

Website design

Students will develop and learn new concepts of website design from year 8.  They will also work with a client brief to develop websites with set requirements.

Ethical, moral and legal issues

Students will look at the ethical moral and legal impacts, both positive and negative, of computing.

Pearson Edexcel Level 2 Certificate in Digital Applications (CiDA)

 

Assessment and Examination

CiDA follows the specification set by the exam board.  Students are assessed for the develop web products unit at the end of year 10 and the digital artwork coursework at the end of year 11:

Digital Artwork: 

A 30 hour controlled assessment project in class, worth 75% of the qualification

Developing Web Products:  

A 2 hour 30 minute practical computer based exam, worth 25% of the qualification

                       

Homework requirements

Due to the nature of the course, homework is not regularly set.  However, after school/lunch time catch up sessions are compulsory for students to keep on top of their controlled assessment if they miss lessons or fall behind on set deadlines. Occasional homework will be set, which will include: research tasks, designing products and evaluating work.

 

OCR GCSE Computer Science (J276)

In Year 10, students focus on Component 2: Computational thinking, algorithms and programming.  The topics include:

  • Computational thinking

  • Producing robust programs
  • Computational logic
  • Translators and data representation

In Year 11, students focus on Component 1: Computer Systems.  The topics include:

  • Central Processing Unit
  • Computer memory and storage
  • Wired and wireless networks
  • Network topologies
  • Systems security
  • System software
  • Ethical, legal, cultural and environmental concerns

 

Assessment and Examination

GCSE Computer Sciences follows the specification set by the exam board and students are assessed at the end of year 11 by 2, 1 hour and 30 minute examinations, each worth 50% of the qualification.

 

Homework requirements

Students are set regular homework that they complete in their revision books, summarising the theory learnt.  Flipped learning is also used, where students research a topic using provided resources and are then complete activities in class to consolidate their learning before assessment.
