School Uniform

It is the policy of the school that all students in Years 7 to 11 wear the agreed uniform. Our school uniform helps to create a smart appearance, a sense of belonging from a common identity and a feeling of pride in The Henry Box School. The full uniform must be worn to and from school. Whilst some clothing items can be open to interpretation, the school reserves the right to make a final decision on what is acceptable.

The Main School Uniform

School V-neck jumper with HBS crest** – this is central to our uniform and all Year 7-10 students must wear these.

School tie** – this is compulsory for all Year 7-10 students. The tie is traditional school colours of blue and red with a House stripe to show allegiance to one of our four Houses allocated to each tutor group.

Trousers and Skirts – Colchester trousers** or Colchester skirts** for girls; Savile trousers** for boys (available for purchase from Sportswear International website, where there are pictures of these items) OR if items are purchased from another supplier they must be identical in appearance to those supplied by Sportswear International. The length of skirts must be on the knee and trousers should be pulled up to the waist.

Shirt - white formal “school shirt”. Vests or T-shirts must be plain white, and shirts must be tucked in unless it is a fitted formal shirt with collar for girls.

Socks – plain, dark only.

Tights – plain, black.

Shoes - black, plain, with black laces, low -heeled, of a sensible design and practical. Black trainers are not permitted as school shoes. Boots are not acceptable.

Belts – these should be black with a plain, reasonably-sized buckle and thin enough to go through standard trouser loops. Belts of excessive width are unacceptable.

Additional Items

Outside Coats - it is important that students have a coat which is warm and weatherproof and which is of a normal style. The school reserves the right not to accept a coat if it would give a poor impression of The Henry Box School.

Scarves - these may be worn in poor weather conditions outdoors

Trainers - these may be worn during sporting activities or on the tennis courts or field during break and lunch time or curricular activities that require them. They should not be worn around school or on the way to or from school.

Jewellery - students may wear a wristwatch, a flat ring and a small crucifix or similar. One small ear stud per ear is allowed but studs or rings in other parts of the body are not permitted. It is not acceptable to have unacceptable items of jewellery covered by a plaster.

Hair dye/style – only hair dyed a natural colour is permitted. Students will be isolated from lessons or sent home until the hair has been restored to a natural colour. The school reserves the right not to accept a hairstyle which may make a poor impression.

Make-up - not allowed in Key Stage 3. In Key Stage 4 discreet make-up is allowed. Coloured nail varnish is not allowed.

PE/Games Kit

All students are given the opportunity to take part in a wide range of physical activities. In the interests of safety, students need to be dressed appropriately for these activities whilst still retaining an identity with the school and also being neat and tidy in appearance. The PE kit allows our students some choice in what they can wear for lessons whilst at the same time retaining uniformity but, more importantly, they can be suitably dressed for specific activities indoors and outside, whatever the conditions.
