Holocaust Memorial Day: 75 Memorial Flames

Our Year 10 GCSE and Year 13 A Level Art students have participated in the Holocaust Memorial Trust’s 75 Flames project.

Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2020 will mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The Henry Box GCSE and A Level artists have created individual encaustic votives; this process involves layering melted wax to bond and layer objects, images and words. Each student made a segment of the flame including resonant words surrounding the issues arising from the holocaust. Students studied the Holocaust at the end of Year 9 in History and have deepened this learning through this cross curricular venture in Art at the start of their GCSE.

HMD Trust will select 75 of the Memorial Flame artworks submitted to form a national exhibition that will be launched at the UK Ceremony for HMD 2020. Each flame will commemorate 75 years since the end of the Holocaust, the genocide perpetrated by the Nazis against the Jews in Europe.

Artworks that are not in the exhibition will be displayed photographically on the HMD website in commemoration of the landmark anniversary. Watch this space https://www.hmd.org.uk/
