Year 9 History conference

Posted on: 29/06/2018

On Tuesday 27th June a group of seven Year 9 students from The Henry Box School traveled by minibus to St Hugh’s College in Oxford for a History Conference about World War One and the impact that it had on Oxfordshire’s families and communities. The Henry Box School, along with seven other local schools, was given the opportunity to listen to lectures and take part in workshops run by invited speakers. One lecture was on the ‘Conscientious Objectors’ of Oxfordshire in the war that refused to fight and how this impacted their dignity and later life. Another presentation focussed on the advertisements in the newspapers and magazines from 1914 to 1918 and how these affected people’s views of wartime Britain. Some adverts were extremely eye-opening, such as one that discussed whether women should receive pocket money from their husbands to spend for themselves. Everyone enjoyed the day and it was neatly rounded off by The Henry Box School winning a hastily prepared argument competition in front of an impressive judging panel including the Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire. Well done!
