Sociology

Choose a Subject

Are you curious about the rapidly changing society in which you live?

Have you ever wondered about the full story behind the important issues in our society? Why are more people getting divorced today?  Why has the Government legalised gay marriage? Why do girls do better at school than boys? Why some ethnic minority groups appear to commit more crime than others? What is the impact of social media and computer games on children?

If you choose to study Sociology you will investigate these kinds of questions for yourself and begin to understand more about your own motivations and behaviours, gaining a wide range of very valuable skills that can be applied to almost any career.

If you are fascinated by the behaviour of others and why we act the way we do, then Sociology is for you.

“Sociology broadens your horizons on so many levels. The things you learn change your whole perspective on life!” Year 12 student.

Key Stage 5

Sociology is offered as an option in Key Stage 5. We study AQA Sociology. The A level course comprises of 3 papers:

Paper 1: Education with Theory and Methods

Paper 2: Topics in Sociology; Families and Households and Global Development

Paper 3: Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods

Each paper is two hours long.

Sociology goes especially well with psychology, geography, religious studies, English, business studies, economics and history. Students also study Sociology from a science or mathematics background – they are keen to try something new and different.

Sociology trains students to answer the ‘what’, ‘how’, and ‘why’ questions about human societies, giving students a competitive edge in the job market and providing a strong intellectual background for students considering careers in the professions or business. Many of our students go on to study criminology, law or international relations. Sociology ‘A’ level is well regarded by all Russell Group Universities.
